Getting started

What do I need to use Rootstep?

An iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26 or later. The Apple Watch app needs watchOS 26 or later and comes with Rootstep on the iPhone it is paired with. To use your plan on several devices or share it with your family, sign in to iCloud on each of them.

Do I need an account?

No. Rootstep has no account and no sign-up. Your plan lives on your device and in your own iCloud.

Which countries does Rootstep work for?

Every move, anywhere. The plan and its deadlines come from your moving day, so every route works. For many countries Rootstep lists the official page for each step with a local rule, and we add pages for more countries as people ask for them.

When no page is listed for a step, the step asks you to check locally, and you can add the official page yourself. To ask for a country's pages, use Request official pages in the route setup, or write to us.

How do I start a second move?

Open the menu at the top right (on iPad, the sidebar) and choose Moves, then add a new move. Starting further moves of your own is part of the Move Pass.

Deadlines and official pages

Are the deadlines in my plan official?

No. Until you set its deadline yourself, an official step shows a planning date and says that it is not the official deadline. To set the real one, open the official page listed for the step, read the rule there and confirm the deadline. The office concerned always has the last word.

What does “check locally” mean?

The step depends on a local rule, and Rootstep has no official page listed for it on your route. Check with the office concerned, then set the deadline yourself. If you find the official page, you can add it to the step.

What does pasting a sentence do?

When you set a deadline, you can paste the sentence from the official page that your deadline rests on. Rootstep fetches the page once and accepts the sentence only if it appears there word for word. After that, the weekly check watches the sentence for you.

What does the weekly page check do, and can I turn it off?

Once a week, Rootstep fetches the public pages behind the rules you confirmed and the links you added, and checks that the quoted sentences are still there. If one has gone, you get a single notification offering to check again. Your plan only changes if you confirm.

The requests carry no cookies and nothing about you. To turn the check off, go to Settings › Official pages.

A page has moved or a rule has changed. How do I tell you?

On the step, use Report an outdated rule. It opens an email to us that names the step and the page and nothing about you. You can also write to us directly.

The trial and the Move Pass

What is free, and what does the Move Pass add?

These stay free for good: your whole plan to view and mark done, every reminder already set, the plan as a PDF, the budget and your receipts, your contacts, each box's status and the moving-day list.

The Move Pass is one payment, not a subscription. It unlocks editing the plan, your own tasks, planning with your family, calendar sync, the assistant and route setup, documents, boxes and labels, printing, and further moves.

How does the 9-day trial work?

The trial starts when you create your first move, and Rootstep shows you its terms first. During the trial you can use everything. You don't give payment details, so nothing is charged when it ends. After the trial nothing is deleted or hidden: every move, step, document and box you made stays yours to see, and the free features keep working. Changing the plan, or adding documents, boxes or people, needs the Move Pass.

How much does the Move Pass cost?

The App Store shows the price in your currency before you buy. You pay once, and the pass covers this move and every later one.

Can my family use my Move Pass?

Yes. The Move Pass is shared through Apple's Family Sharing. In addition, anyone you invite to a move can edit that move under your pass, without buying anything.

How do I restore my purchase on a new iPhone or iPad?

Go to Settings › Move Pass › Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought the pass with.

How do I ask for a refund?

Apple handles all payments and refunds. In Rootstep, go to Settings › Move Pass to open Apple's refund request, or visit reportaproblem.apple.com. If Apple refunds the pass, Rootstep goes back to the free plan. Nothing you entered is deleted.

Widgets, Apple Watch, labels and the budget

Can I mark steps done without opening the app?

Yes. Add the Rootstep widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen and tap the circle next to a step. On the Lock Screen, Face ID or your passcode confirms it. A reminder's notification has Mark done and Remind me tomorrow, and on moving day the Live Activity has a Done button for each line. Siri and Shortcuts can also tell you what's next.

Does Rootstep work on Apple Watch?

Yes. With Rootstep on your iPhone, the Apple Watch app shows the move you have open there: the days to go, how many official steps need attention, and the next steps. Tap the circle next to a step to mark it done. You have a moment to undo it, and if your iPhone is out of reach, the step is marked done there when they next connect. Add Rootstep's complications to a watch face for the countdown and your official steps.

Dates and everything else change on the iPhone. The watch app needs watchOS 26 or later, and there is nothing extra to buy: marking steps done is free. If Rootstep isn't on your watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and install it from there.

How do box labels work?

Give each box a number, list what's inside and print its label. The QR code on the label holds the same text, so any phone camera shows what's in the box. In Rootstep, Scan a label opens the box itself. You can print labels, share them as a PDF or save them to Photos.

Which currencies does the budget support?

Any currency. Rootstep converts costs into your budget's currency with the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, or with a rate you set. Each cost keeps the rate of the day you entered it. Turn the daily update off in Settings › Budget.

Sharing and iCloud

How do I share a move with my family?

Open the menu (on iPad, the sidebar), choose Family and iCloud › Invite your family, and send the invitation through the share sheet. Each person you invite needs an Apple Account and iCloud. You can let them edit the move or make it view only.

My plan doesn't appear on my other device. What should I check?
  1. Both devices are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account.
  2. iCloud is switched on for Rootstep in Settings › [your name] › iCloud.
  3. You have free iCloud storage.
  4. Both devices are online. Leave Rootstep open for a minute so the change can sync.

The Family and iCloud screen shows the sync status. If it still doesn't work, write to us.

Can people I invite see my other moves or documents?

No. They only see the move you shared with them, and they can only edit it if you allowed that. You can stop sharing at any time.

Documents, privacy and your data

Where is my data stored?

Your data is stored on your device and in your own iCloud, never on our servers, because we don't have any. We cannot see your plan, your documents or your scans. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I lock my documents?

Your documents and scans can be locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Turn this on in Settings › Documents. If the option is missing, first set a passcode for your device.

How do I delete all my data?

Go to Settings › Delete all data. This removes your plans, documents and photos from all your devices and from your iCloud, and it cannot be undone. If you want to keep a copy, export a PDF first.

Does the assistant send my plan anywhere?

No. The assistant and the letter helper run on your device. Written answers need Apple Intelligence: iPhone 15 Pro or later, an iPad with M1 or later, or iPad mini with A17 Pro. On other devices the same screens still work from your plan.

The assistant doesn't decide whether you qualify for a visa, permit or exemption. Instead, it points you to the steps and their official pages.

Troubleshooting

I'm not getting reminders.

Rootstep asks for notification permission the first time you turn reminders on. Check Settings › Notifications › Rootstep on your device, your Focus settings, and the quiet hours in Rootstep's Settings › Reminders.

My deadlines don't show in my calendar.

Calendar sync adds a calendar called “Rootstep” and only reads that one. Check that it is switched on in Rootstep's Settings and visible in the Calendar app. Then check access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Calendars › Rootstep on your device.

Rootstep shows a screen saying it can't open my data.

Your data has not been deleted. Restart your device and open Rootstep again. If the screen comes back, tap Contact support on it, or write to us. Please don't delete the app before we've replied.

Rootstep is a planning guide. It is not a government service, it is not connected to any authority, and it is not legal advice. For questions about a rule or your situation, contact the office concerned.
