Terms of use
Terms of use
Plain terms for using the Rootstep: Move Planner app and this website.
In short
- Rootstep is a planning guide, not a government service and not legal advice. The office concerned always has the last word.
- You read each rule on its official page and set your own deadlines.
- The Move Pass is a one-time purchase made through Apple, and Apple handles payments and refunds.
- Your plan is yours. It lives on your device and in your iCloud.
1. Who these terms are with
These terms are between you and the developer of Rootstep, based in Basel, Switzerland (“we”, “us”). The developer's name is shown on Rootstep's App Store page. Your licence to use the app is governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the “Apple EULA”). These terms add what is specific to Rootstep. If the two conflict, the Apple EULA wins. Apple is not responsible for Rootstep or its content.
2. What Rootstep is, and is not
Rootstep helps you plan a move. It lists the steps, counts deadlines from your moving day and links official pages. It is not a government service and is not connected to any authority. It is also not legal, immigration, tax or financial advice.
Rules differ from place to place and change over time. Rootstep does not bundle rules or deadlines for any country. Until you set a deadline, a step shows a planning date, which is not an official deadline. You are responsible for checking the rule that applies to you on the official page or with the office concerned, and for meeting your deadlines.
3. Official pages and other websites
Links to government and other websites are provided for your convenience. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for what they say, whether they are available, or whether they are accurate. Rootstep's weekly check tells you when a sentence you confirmed is no longer on its page. It cannot guarantee that a rule has not changed in some other way.
Currency rates come from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, or from the rates you enter. They are for planning only.
4. The trial and the Move Pass
- When you create your first move, you can use every feature free for 9 days. You don't give payment details, and nothing is charged when the trial ends.
- The Move Pass is a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase. It is not a subscription. It unlocks the features listed in the app for this move and every later one.
- You buy it through the App Store at the price shown there. Apple's terms apply to the payment, and Apple decides on refunds.
- You can share the Move Pass through Apple's Family Sharing. People you invite to a move can edit that move under your pass.
- Without the pass, after the trial, Rootstep keeps working for viewing your plan and marking steps done, along with the other free features listed in the app. Nothing you entered is deleted.
5. Your content
Everything you enter is yours, and we claim no rights in it. Your content is stored on your device and in your iCloud, as the privacy policy describes. Keep your device and iCloud backed up, because we have no copy of your data and cannot restore it.
When you share a move, you decide who sees it. Share only what you are entitled to share, and use comments respectfully.
6. Fair use
Don't misuse Rootstep. For example, don't use it for anything unlawful, interfere with the official websites it reads, or try to get around the Move Pass.
7. Changes to the app
We keep improving Rootstep and may change, add or remove features. Some features depend on other services, such as iCloud, Apple Intelligence, government websites and the European Central Bank, and these may change or become unavailable. Features you paid for will not be removed without good reason.
8. Liability
We build Rootstep with care, but we cannot promise that it is free of errors or always available. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. That includes missed deadlines, decisions of authorities, and the content of third-party websites. We remain liable for intent and gross negligence. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be waived.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by Swiss law. The courts of Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws and courts of the country where you live.
10. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will update this page and its date. If a change matters to you, the app will tell you before it applies.
